Patronaires, Orange Area Service Committee and new Orange Branch librarian brief board on volunteer, grant and public programs

Several community and parent-support groups and the new branch librarian gave brief reports to the Orange Board of Education on Sept. 9.

Patronaires Amy (presenter identified as Amy) described Patronaires’ efforts to expand music participation beginning in sixth grade, spirit-wear sales and a summer program that increased participation. She said the group ran a spirit-wear shop and had successful summer activities and outreach to middle-school students.

Orange Area Service Committee Jackie Godelich, identified as president, said the committee conducts one annual fundraising mailer to the school district and uses proceeds for direct emergency grants. She said the group awarded aid this year to about 23 individuals or families and has granted just under $24,000 so far in 2024; awards typically cover items such as one month’s rent, utilities, summer-camp support and grocery gift cards. Godelich asked school staff and board members to refer families who might need help and to use the organization’s application and contact information.

Cuyahoga County Public Library — Orange Branch Kat Redding, the new team librarian at the Orange Branch of the Cuyahoga County Public Library, introduced herself, described partnership efforts with district librarians and outlined upcoming programs: tween tech nights (ages 9–12) featuring Sphero robots and other tech; artist deep dives for ages 12 and up; and casual craft programs (“crafternoons”). Redding said she would be the public-library liaison for incoming sixth graders and invited district staff to share events or questions; she left business cards for staff.

Ending: Board members thanked the presenters and encouraged the groups to continue outreach to district families. Administration said it would coordinate distribution of event information through district channels.
