Community speaker urges board to preserve Green Heart Exchange and inclusive programming

At the April 24 meeting of the Washington Elementary School District governing board, Ton Altenova, a member of the Washington Elementary District Education Association (WDEA), urged the board to preserve the Green Heart Exchange (Teach USA) program and to continue inclusive services for immigrant and minority students.
"If we can't include our immigrants, our families, and our people who are minorities, and we can't by faith say, hey, our teachers stand with you by experience, then what are we doing here?" Altenova said, tying a short recitation of a personal mission statement to support for the program. Altenova identified the teachers in the program as "valuable" and said many are highly educated and bring personal experience to students.
The speaker concluded by asking the board to stand with the program and its teachers; no formal action or vote on the Green Heart Exchange program was taken during the meeting.
Board leadership acknowledged the comment along with other public participation and asked staff to follow up on safety and climate items raised during the same public comment period.
