Gilroy police promote two sergeants and name a new captain
Summary
The Gilroy Police Department introduced three promotions at the council meeting: Diana Casey and Daniel Panetta to sergeant, and Lamont Tony to captain. Department leaders and the promoted officers spoke briefly after the introductions.
City leaders and police staff introduced three internal promotions at the April 21 meeting.
Chief Darren Espinosa introduced the personnel changes and asked the council and community to congratulate the promoted officers. The promoted officers are:
- Sergeant Diana Casey, a 22‑year department veteran with assignments including anti‑crime investigations, field training, major-accident investigation and mounted enforcement. - Sergeant Daniel Panetta, a Gilroy native and Gilroy High graduate, promoted after nearly 15 years with the department and prior service with the Oakland Police Department and the U.S. Army Reserves. - Captain Lamont Tony, promoted to captain after more than a decade with the department in roles including gang investigations, defensive tactics supervision, SWAT team leadership and administrative sergeant duties; staff noted his work leading recruitment and the quality-of-life officer program.
Each of the promoted officers thanked the department and community. Captain Tony said he was “very excited for this opportunity” and said he brings an “enthusiastic and a can do attitude” to the role. The council offered congratulatory remarks.
