Monticello board approves second readings of multiple district policies on safety, nutrition and calendar

The Monticello School Board on April 21 approved second readings and final adoption of multiple district policies after a staff presentation outlining minor and substantive changes.
Rob Daneker, the district’s director of human resources, presented the policies and summarized key edits. Several policies were updated mainly for language cleanup as part of the regular review cycle. Notable substantive changes highlighted in the presentation included:
- School Meals (Policy 5.34): clarified Nutrition Services practices; a la carte or second-meal purchases must be prepaid and the policy establishes procedures for addressing negative balances.
- Food Allergies/Special Dietary Needs (Policy 5.53): updated departmental reference to “Nutrition Services” and amended the turnaround time for addressing special dietary accommodation requests to five business days (previously 24 hours).
- Restraint and Seclusion (Policy 5.60): legal references regarding restraint and seclusion were added to align the policy with state law and guidance.
- Curriculum and Instructional Goals (Policy 6.01): replaced prior references to the ‘‘World’s Best Workforce’’ language with the state’s updated terminology ‘‘comprehensive achievement and civic readiness’’ following recent legislative changes.
Daneker reviewed a package of policies (student motor vehicle use and parking; wellness; school meals; service animals; early graduation; emergency closings; bomb threats; early admission; homeless-student enrollment dispute resolution; food allergies/special diets; restraint and seclusion; curriculum goals; school calendar). The board moved to adopt the set on second reading; the motion passed 5-0. Board members noted these had been circulated previously and vetted via the policy review process.
Actions: The board adopted the listed policy revisions and directed administration to implement updated operational practices (e.g., meal payment procedures, updated turnaround times for dietary requests) consistent with the adopted language.
