Afterward the council opened nominations and voted 5-0 to install Sonia Carter as mayor and later voted 5-0 to name Councilmember Elliott mayor pro tem.
Councilmember Michael C. Crenshaw thanked his family and the community after taking the oath. "I really appreciate the opportunity given to me by the the council and the faith, given to me for this the community. I am truly here. I truly believe in working for the community. That is our job," Crenshaw said.
Mayor Sonia Carter did not outline a formal agenda at the meeting; Councilmember Elliott used remarks after the vote to describe immediate priorities. Elliott said the council's "first priority is just to address the downtown," and cited homelessness as a consistent community concern. Elliott also said he is seeking a "swimming scholarship" program so "memberships of the community can use the aquatic center during the summer with a reduced or no payment," noting families with multiple children may otherwise be unable to afford entry.
The special meeting did not accept public comment or non-agenda items, and councilmembers confirmed a quorum at the start of the session. The meeting began at 10:05 a.m. and was adjourned at 10:17 a.m.
