County approves 20 historic signs to mark fruit and vegetable industry sites

The Muscatine County Board of Supervisors voted Oct. 6 to allow the county Historic Preservation Commission to purchase and install 20 signs marking sites identified in a recent survey of the county’s historic fruit and vegetable industry.
Historic Preservation Commissioner Lynn Pruitt told the board the survey documents sites that are still visible as well as locations where the industry once operated; the commission plans 24-inch square signs similar to earlier markers for country schools and churches. Commission chair Chris Bridal said color copies of the survey will be published and available for purchase, estimated at about $30 to $40 per copy.
County staff asked the commission to be mindful of sight-line and driveway clearance when placing signs; commissioners said they will coordinate with transportation staff and obtain necessary permissions. The board approved the commission’s request by voice vote.
Commissioners said the program has had positive local reception and that additional signs will be installed in coming weeks.
