Port Washington’s fire department told the Public Facilities Commission on Oct. 13 it has been awarded a $10,000 grant from the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources to help fund a new grass fire truck, and that work on the city’s Public Safety Building — including a new training tower — is progressing.
The chief said the new grass truck is currently in the construction phase in Pennsylvania, where the service body is being installed. Once it returns, department personnel will install lights, a brush bumper, tires and a lift before sending it to Marquez and Renard’s Fire Equipment for pump and firefighting-equipment installation.
“That vehicle is currently in the construction phase. … We hope to have it done by the end of the year, but that's a pretty aggressive timeline,” the chief said. The department plans to place the 1992 grass truck on the Wisconsin Surplus auction list once the replacement is fully in service.
On the Public Safety Building, the chief said structural steel for the training tower is up and that the tower will allow live hose- and water-training that cannot be simulated at the station. The department said it is also working with local technical schools to explore joint training opportunities.
