A committee of Milwaukee alderpersons approved four ordinances on parking, traffic and sales from vehicles, including a change to allow sales from parked vehicles within the footprints of city-permitted special events.
The measures approved by voice or unanimous consent included changes to parking controls on North 40 Ninth Street (File No. 250009), a traffic control to install a stop sign at the intersection of Beau and Cassie (File No. 250010), an amendment to allow sales from vehicles inside the footprint of a Department of Public Works (DPW)-permitted special event (File No. 250023), and a change to the list of prohibited locations for sales from vehicles along West Greenfield Avenue (File No. 250024).
The DPW’s Scott Reinbacher told the committee the parking change in File No. 250009 would allow parking “on the East side of North 40 Ninth Street between Burleigh and … 0.260 feet south of there” to provide spaces for adjacent residences and hospital visitors. On File No. 250010, staff said the only change was installation of a stop sign for eastbound traffic at Beau and Cassie.
On File No. 250023, Alderman Speicher and Jim Cooney of the licensed division explained the current code prohibited sales from vehicles even inside a permitted special event footprint. Cooney said the prior code “would prohibit sales from vehicles within the footprint of a DPW permitted special event,” preventing organizers from inviting food trucks or trailers. The ordinance change gives event coordinators the authority to permit those vehicles for the duration of a permitted event. Committee members asked how unauthorized vendors would be handled; Cooney said the special-event permit and the event coordinator’s enforcement (barricades, no-parking signs and requests to leave) would be used to address trespassers.
On File No. 250024, staff said the change was intended to address an inconsistency along West Greenfield Avenue where West Milwaukee allowed late-night food truck parking but the Milwaukee side did not. Ms. Doherty described the measure as a short-term fix for a longstanding truck operating near 40th and Greenfield until the corridor is considered for a formal food-truck zone.
All four items were moved and approved by the committee by voice consent with no objections recorded. Alder Moore asked to be recorded as an affirmative vote for Items 1 and 2 during the meeting record.
The ordinances take effect according to the city’s usual code-enactment procedures; staff did not identify implementation dates at the meeting.
Committee members thanked staff and organizers and closed the items without further amendment.
