The Saline County Conservation District asked Saline County commissioners April 29 for $26,000 in county funding to support education, technical assistance and state cost-share programs.
District Manager Diana Harden (presenting with board member Jason Kern) described the district's 2024 and early-2025 education outreach, including local Ag Awareness Day, Earth Day events and participation in the Kansas Envirothon for high-school students. Harden said the district administers state cost-share programs funded by the Kansas Department of Agriculture's Division of Conservation and the Kansas Water Plan Fund, including a water-resource program and a nonpoint-source pollution control program that offer financial assistance to landowners for conservation practices.
Harden noted that state aid matches up to $25,000 for county-provided funds and that the district's board requested $26,000 from the county. She said the district employs three full-time staff (manager, full-time conservation technician supported by state technical assistance funds, and a full-time archaeologist also supported by state funds) and serves as a liaison between landowners and federal, state and local programs.
Ending: Commissioners heard the presentation and took the budget request under advisement for the county budget process; no appropriation vote was recorded at the meeting.
