Senior Services reports record meals and fundraising gains; seeks grants for building work

Rosie Walter, director of Saline County Department of Senior Services, told commissioners April 29 that the department saw rising meal counts and fundraising results for the January'March 2025 quarter and is pursuing grants for facility repairs.
Walter reported 28,932 meals served during the quarter (17,635 Meals on Wheels and 11,297 dining-room meals) and said participation and subsidized-meal percentages have increased. She said the Greater Salina Community Foundation's Match Madness event raised $23,084 for Meals on Wheels and $5,436 for senior services; the department also received a $10,000 donation for a Meals on Wheels and Healthcare for Pets program, which currently enrolls 43 pets.
Walter said the Dane Hansen Foundation awarded $25,000 that was used for building repairs and that the department has applied to the North Central Regional Planning Commission for a Community Development Block Grant to address the parking lot, sidewalks, lighting and roof replacement (application due June 2025). She reported volunteer engagement (about 95 volunteers at a recent volunteer dinner) and that the new food contractor (Trinity) has improved meal delivery after an initial learning curve.
Budget figures presented: the department reported quarter-to-date revenues of $106,757 against personnel, contractual and commodity expenses totaling $163,768, producing a county cost for the quarter of $57,011; Walter said expenses were lower than the prior year in part because of a new Trinity contract.
Ending: Commissioners were invited to the May 16 health fair; Walter said staff will continue grant-seeking for building and roof work and to support Meals on Wheels.
