Committee hears months-long fight over proposed pit dewatering near San Joaquin River

Assemblymember Arambulo introduced AB 1425, a narrowly drawn bill that would ban pit dewatering within the San Joaquin River Parkway where subsurface river flow or groundwater levels are shallower than 50 feet.
“Unfortunately, the river is at risk due to an unregulated process known as pit dewatering,” Arambulo told the committee, describing a proposed project that he said would be ‘‘a mere 200 feet from the river’’ and would include a ‘‘plan to blast and drill a 600 foot pit.’’ He and other supporters said the project’s draft environmental review failed to analyze future restoration flows and other hydrologic changes.
