County accepts $4,800 KDHE grant to expand residential well testing

The Saline County Board of Commissioners accepted a KDHE local environmental protection program grant April 29 that will pay for residential and agricultural well testing.
Hannah Bet, deputy county administrator, said the county's environmental health services division applied for a KDHE grant to support water and wastewater projects. The county was notified it would be awarded $4,800 to cover approximately 60 water tests over a one-year period; staff will collect samples at locations to allow inspection of wellheads and to provide homeowner education.
Bet told commissioners there is no income requirement for the testing; the program is designed for any homeowner with a private well who requests testing. She said historically water testing was done at homeowners' expense and the grant will cover supplies and staff time, reducing that burden.
Motion and outcome: Commissioners moved to accept RFA 2025-54 as presented and approved the grant acceptance by voice vote.
Ending: The grant acceptance will allow county public-health staff to perform additional well testing and outreach; Bet said staff will collect samples and check wellhead conditions as part of the service.
