Clovis volunteer programs report: 72 RSVP volunteers, foster grandparents and senior companions supporting seniors

Diana (last name not specified) reported that RSVP (Retired and Senior Volunteer Program) currently has 72 volunteers who logged 1,269 hours in the reporting month. Staff also said foster-grandparent and senior-companion programs are active: 14 foster grandparents completed recent on-site visits in classrooms and 15 senior companions were serving in 22 homes providing companionship and transport for errands and medical appointments.
Shelley Wynne reported on the AARP tax-assistance effort: the program prepared 1,833 tax returns this season, producing refunds totaling $1,778,353. Organizers noted many returns served older adults and nursing-home residents and that volunteers provided the service free to clients.
RSVP volunteers also contributed to community projects: crocheters and knitters donated lap blankets and hats to shelters and other local agencies; volunteers will help staff an upcoming county conference by assembling 600–700 information bags; and volunteers are partnering on a community garden expected to begin producing by June. Staff said recruitment and pre-service training are planned for May to expand volunteer capacity.
Committee members thanked volunteers and noted the programs are a major source of community service; no formal committee action was taken.
