Christie Larson, executive director of Southern Valley Alliance, told the Chaska City Council on Oct. 20 that the nonprofit served 89 victims in Chaska during the organization’s last fiscal year and answered more than 2,000 crisis-line calls annually.
Larson said the agency provides “crisis intervention, emotional support, resources, and safety planning” and that moving its advocacy center to Shakopee in January 2024 increased local demand about 20 percent. “As a community based and community funded organization, Southern Valley Alliance is facing significant federal, state, and local foundation funding cuts,” Larson said.
The presentation came during the council’s visitor presentation segment in recognition of Domestic Violence Awareness Month. The city’s mayor and council members thanked the speaker and discussed possible recognition, such as a proclamation at a future meeting.
Larson encouraged residents to learn more and to support the group’s local fundraisers, including an annual poinsettia sale and a purse bingo event. She provided the organization’s website as sbamn.org for more information.
The city did not take formal action on the presentation during the meeting; council members expressed support and asked staff to follow up about options for formal recognition at a later date.
The council’s public comment and visitor presentation time is for information sharing and does not, by itself, create or change city policy. No proclamation or budgetary commitment was adopted at the Oct. 20 meeting.
