The City Council approved funding of $800,000 for Hazard Park improvements, including wetland restoration and educational uses, voting 13–0.
Supporters including Gonzalo Molina, who identified himself as representing a congressional committee, and Alec Mann, chair of Friends of Hazard Park, spoke at a brief public hearing about the park's historical significance and its educational value. Molina said the park “has historical significance because bilingual education was born there,” and urged council support for funds for the wetlands. Mann described recent park work and photographs showing the wetland adjacent to local schools used for environmental study.
Councilmember Pacheco framed the allocation as a ‘‘win-win’’ for the community, noting the city attorney had earlier secured possession of an easement from a railroad that enabled eligibility for the funds. The council opened and closed the hearing and recorded a unanimous roll call (13 ayes) approving the item.
Next steps: staff will proceed with the disbursement or contracting process as appropriate to implement park and wetlands improvements.
