During the public comment portion of the July 21 meeting, a resident who identified himself as Mister Frank urged the city to increase public information about what Oregon law defines as illegal fireworks, and the penalties for using them without a permit.
Mister Frank said fireworks that fly more than 12 inches vertically or travel more than 6 feet horizontally without a permit are illegal in Oregon and that violations can result in a class B misdemeanor and a fine up to $25,500. He urged the city to inform citizens via the water bill, online flyers or the library reader board and suggested offering an amnesty event for turning in illegal fireworks. He also cited public-safety concerns, wildfire risk, and impacts on people with PTSD and pets.
The mayor noted the comment and said he had seen social-media posts reflecting similar concerns.
Ending: The council did not take formal action at the meeting; staff and council acknowledged constituent concern and referenced the possibility of public education efforts before the next July 4 holiday.
