Stayton reports smoldering incident at wastewater biosolids building; operations restored

Stayton Public Works reported that biosolids in the wastewater treatment plant’s biosolids building began smoldering on the morning of July 21. Staff called the local fire service, which responded and helped contain the situation; crews doused the smoldering material with water and assisted cleanup, and the plant returned to normal operations the same day.
Interim Public Works Director Barry Buchanan credited the fire service for the response and said staff used water to keep the issue under control until firefighters arrived. City staff described the dryer’s function and said the processed biosolid remainder is a Class A-grade fertilizer (referred to in the meeting as a marketable, Class A product) that the city has given away in the past. Staff asked residents and local agricultural users to contact the city if they could use the material.
