Northbrook announces new community resiliency specialist, facility projects and sustainability events

The Village of Northbrook introduced Raul Tejeda, a community resiliency specialist provided through the Northern Illinois Public Safety Training Academy (NPSTA), and officials outlined several facility projects and sustainability initiatives during the president's and manager's reports.
Tejeda, described by staff as an emergency management and community resilience professional with experience in business continuity and former U.S. Army intelligence work, will support local emergency preparedness updates and workforce training. Village staff said updates to the local emergency operations plan are planned.
Officials also provided project updates: Fire Station 11 (near Dundee Road west of Skokie Boulevard) is planned for replacement, with construction anticipated to begin in fall 2025 and an expected opening in the second half of 2026. A new fleet maintenance garage acquired in Sky Harbor is in design and expected to begin construction in late 2025 and open in late 2026.
Economic-development and community updates included an announced plan by Lifetime to open a "Lifetime North Shore Sport and Racquet" facility focused on pickleball with phased construction and an expected phase-one opening in early 2026. Village staff also noted new and expanding businesses including Bean Bar and Landmark on the Hill.
Sustainability items: the village is rolling out a curbside composting program with collections beginning Wednesday, May 7; a recycling extravaganza is scheduled April 26 at the West Commuter Lot downtown (9 a.m. to noon) that includes paper shredding and specialty recycling; Slow Mow May and a Climate Action Day on June 7 at Village Hall are planned; and Flamingo Friday (a kickoff community event) is scheduled for May 9 from 5 to 7 p.m. Village staff also reminded residents of an April 26 National Prescription Drug Take Back hosted by the police department (no needles or inhalers accepted).
