District staff summarized minor edits to the code of conduct for the 2025–26 school year — including updated team names and a reference to misuse of artificial intelligence — and said the document will be posted for a 30-day public comment period before a public hearing and final recommendation this summer.
Fairport Central School District officials on the board workshop agenda described planned, mostly technical changes to the district's code of conduct for the 2025–26 school year and announced a 30‑day public comment period.
Deb Miles, who presented the draft, said the edits mainly update internal team names and add a brief reference that misuse of artificial intelligence (AI) would fall under the district's existing academic dishonesty rules. "Misuse of AI obviously would be included in that," Miles said, adding that the district intends to leave the detailed guidance about classroom-level AI use to teachers and forthcoming professional development.
The draft replaces older team names with new ones to align with the district's MTSS structure, including renaming the instructional support team the early warning indicators team and the student support team the student success team. Miles said those teams "are operating a little bit differently in the buildings with different membership and different purposes," and the code of conduct text was adjusted to reflect those changes.
On phones and statewide policy, presenters said the code includes current local practices but noted there is uncertainty about a possible state-level change. "If the governor comes forward with a mandated ban on cell phones, then we'll obviously need to amend the code of conduct briefly to align with that," Miles said. Board members asked whether the district could adopt changes immediately if the state acts; staff said they plan to include a disclaimer in the public notice that parts of the code may be amended pending guidance from the New York State Education Department and that the board could reopen the document for an addendum if necessary.
The district will post the draft code of conduct for public comment from April 23 to May 23, hold a public hearing at the May 27 board meeting for those who sign up through the district clerk, and present a recommendation for final approval at the June board meeting. The district clerk named for public submissions is Sarah Driscoll.
The draft and presentation emphasize that more detailed classroom-level AI guidance is being developed separately by the director of staff development and the technology team and will be covered through teacher professional development and classroom rubrics rather than through detailed code language.
Board members and staff encouraged public review during the comment period and said the district will publish instructions for submitting comments and signing up to speak at the public hearing.
