Ambassador Jörg Lauber, president of the United Nations Human Rights Council, on Friday summarized outcomes of the council’s recent regular session and highlighted a priority to strengthen the council’s role within the global human rights architecture.
Lauber told reporters in New York that the council extended 16 thematic and country-specific mandates, adopted universal periodic review (UPR) reports for 13 states, and appointed three members to the Expert Mechanism on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples. He said, for the first time since 2011, there was consensus to renew the mandate of the commission of inquiry on Syria.
