Liberty Thompson, supervisor at Reno County Community Corrections and the program provider for Reno County Drug Court, briefed the commission on the structure and goals of drug court and requested $10,000 from the county’s special alcohol tax fund to support program needs.
Thompson described drug court as a specialty treatment court that places participants into longer, closely supervised treatment with regular appearances before a judge (Chief Judge Gilligan) and a multi-disciplinary team that issues incentives and sanctions. The Reno County drug court has operated since 2011 and aims to keep people in treatment longer than typical supervision programs.
Thompson said the $10,000 would be used to subsidize short-term Oxford House placements for people leaving jail or residential treatment, pay for incentives such as small gift cards and cover modest graduation expenses (for example, refreshments) to mark successful program completions. She said the funds come from the county’s special alcohol tax revenue and that, while modest, $10,000 stretches farther in the program than the dollar amount alone implies.
Thompson invited commissioners and the public to observe drug court sessions (held every other Monday) and attend graduations, which she said are powerful learning moments for officials and the community.
Commissioners noted the value of observing drug court and thanked Thompson for the presentation. Thompson did not record a formal vote request in the meeting transcript; the presentation served as a funding request to be considered during upcoming budget deliberations.
