Highland Beach volunteer turtle program recognized; town grant to support outreach

Joanne Ryan, the permit holder recognized by Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) for Highland Beach, addressed the commission during public comment on Oct. 7 and thanked the town for continued support and a small grant that will fund supplies and outreach.
Ryan said the permit allows up to 25 volunteers and that the program is at full capacity with a wait list. She described recent volunteer activities, including a live turtle hatch observed this summer and engagement with college‑age volunteers who received course credit for their service. Ryan said the town’s recent envelope of funds will help pay for outreach tables, educational materials and supplies, and she invited commissioners to an annual recognition event after the new year.
The commission and residents thanked Ryan and volunteers for conservation work. Ryan identified a volunteer, Bree, who is being trained as a qualified assistant and who will help develop program infrastructure such as a website and fundraising outreach.
