First Steps Recovery tells board it is addressing county permitting concerns at Sequoia facility

FRESNO — A representative for First Steps Recovery told the Board of Supervisors on Oct. 7 that the treatment provider is working to resolve permitting issues raised by county staff at its Sequoia facility and intends to remain in Fresno County.
Attorney Tal Eslick said First Steps Recovery serves county residents, many of whom are veterans, and that the operator had retained Fresno-based engineering support and submitted an updated work plan to the county as recently as the night before. Eslick said one cited concern — a commercial stove — was removed from the facility.
"We take these permitting issues very, very seriously, and we're going to continue to cooperate with the county in every way possible to address them," Eslick said. He asked the board to consider the facility's role in serving people in recovery and urged county staff to work with the operator to resolve outstanding items so services could continue.
No action was taken; the remarks were made during the meeting's public presentations period.
