Stonecrest committee presses for reflector, restriping and DeKalb County coordination on several roads

Committee members told the TIP Committee on Oct. 8 that lack of lane reflectors and faded striping creates nighttime safety risks on several Stonecrest roads and asked staff to pursue estimates and potential outside funding.
Council member Terry Graves and others described dark stretches on Evans Mill and other roads and asked staff to explore restriping and installing reflectors. The committee discussed two approaches: seek DeKalb County restriping (for county-maintained segments) or hire a contractor and have the city pay directly. Committee members asked staff to get cost estimates so the committee can make an explicit recommendation to the city manager.
Members referenced a state safety grant program administered by the Georgia Department of Transportation and other possible GDOT sources discussed at a Georgia Municipal Association conference; one member said the funding source discussed there was “not LMEG, and it wasn’t LRA” but did not provide a program name. The deputy city manager said staff would attempt to identify grant options and that the city’s new grant writer could pursue suitable applications.
The committee asked Council members to submit the streets in their districts that should be prioritized. Staff said some work orders may already be in DeKalb County’s queue and that staff would follow up with the mayor about county coordination. The committee set a deadline: council members should provide prioritized street lists to the deputy city manager by Oct. 15 so staff can produce cost estimates for the next meeting.
No formal procurement decision was made. Committee members directed staff to return with quotes and to report back on any county commitments so the committee can vote on a funding path at a future meeting.
