Board supports securing foreclosed parcel with tower to preserve public‑safety communications option

The Operation and Policy Committee voted to support county staff in securing a foreclosed parcel adjacent to a highway that staff and the sheriff’s office identified as useful for future public‑safety communications equipment.

Al, the county administrator, said the sheriff requested securing the property because the site contains a tower and could be used for improved antenna placement for public safety. Linda, speaking for staff, explained that the parcel went through the court foreclosure process, that the treasurer completed required notices and that no one filed a claim. She said the back taxes on the parcel total about $17,000 and that the county could either keep the property on the tax rolls (and pay taxes going forward) or convert it to county property for a public purpose.

Al and Linda told commissioners that a future action item will return to the board to approve terms for a lease allowing a cell‑tower operator to continue paying for space on the tower; staff said they are already in contact with the tower company. Commissioners asked about risks tied to prior ownership and the tower lease; staff said they checked probate records and found no estate claims and that the lease to the prior owner is typically impacted by foreclosure. Commissioner Faber asked whether the county could later sell or repurpose the parcel if it is not needed; staff said securing the parcel for now would not prevent future disposition decisions.

A motion to support the acquisition passed on a voice vote and will go to the full Board at its next meeting for final action.
