Sunnyside students combine art and music in spring showcase, district says

District staff described a recent Sunnyside performing and visual-arts showcase that combined student artwork with musical performances. Presenters told the board the event paired each student's art project with a song and that the combined format boosted family engagement before and after the program.
A Sunnyside staff member (presenting slides during the meeting) said art teacher Rachel Fritz collected artwork from every student and music teacher Amy Cavanato matched songs to the visual pieces. The presentation noted projects at every elementary grade level, examples of paired themes (for example, "Look What We Can Do" paired with concentric circles art in kindergarten), and special accommodations made so students with autism or other needs could participate at their level.
Administrators thanked custodial and facilities staff, the PE teacher who assisted with logistics, and Sunnyside administrators for support during the week of concerts. Board members praised the showcase and asked whether the district planned to continue the combined model; the presenter said the plan is to try to continue but acknowledged it was a large undertaking.
