Board approves $135,000 video surveillance upgrade for district buildings

The Stewartville Public School District Board of Education voted 7-0 to accept a vendor quote to replace and upgrade the district video surveillance system.
Administrators said the current cameras are about 15 years old, the software is no longer supported and the new system will replace 56 cameras, associated cabling, servers, hardware and software licenses. The preferred vendor, listed as Custom Alarm with an OpenEye system, submitted the lowest quote at about $135,000, plus a monthly service fee of roughly $780. District staff explained the monthly fee covers live monitoring, notifications and on-phone incident alerts for supervisors; staff also said the quoted per-camera monitoring rate would be $5 per camera for notification services.
Staff said the project does not meet the formal bidding threshold (noted as $175,000) and that funding will come from the district's Safe Schools and Capital Outlay disbursements, with LTFM as a back-up if needed. Technology staff member Mr. Conger told the board he was comfortable with the chosen vendor and system. The work will cover the high school, middle school, Bonner (BCI) and elementary building coverage adjustments presented in an assessment; the district said some cameras will be relocated and newer cameras (including fisheye and motion-swivel types) will improve coverage.
Mr. Geist moved to accept the Custom Alarm/OpenEye quote and Mr. Lowman seconded. The motion carried 7-0.
Administrators said installation is planned for the summer and will link into existing exterior door fogging/alarm systems.
