Construction managers and the general contractor updated the Gonzales City Council on Oct. 6 that the new community center is close to finishing interior and exterior work and that staff expects a temporary certificate of occupancy inspection on Nov. 4.
Why it matters: The community center is a multi-use facility that includes a library, a teen innovation center, classrooms and a courtyard. Council members have emphasized timely completion so the building can host programs for residents and youth.
Work completed and schedule: Luis Flores, the city's construction manager, said exterior site concrete is substantially complete; irrigation is about 95% finished; two concrete planters and the steel canopy are installed; and one or two concrete pours remain (the amphitheater seat wall and the monument sign footing). Contractor Tyler Verduin said HPL exterior panels and roof fascia are installed and most interior finishes are complete, including acoustic ceilings, lighting, interior paint and tile. He said interior doors and hardware are about 90% finished.
Flores credited coordination with PG&E for an unusually fast permanent-power hookup: the project's switchgear arrived July 15 and permanent power was established Aug. 25, roughly six weeks after delivery. The construction team is targeting Nov. 4 for temporary certificate of occupancy and substantial completion, with final completion projected about 45 days later on Dec. 19.
Capacity and amenities: Council member Lorraine Worthy asked about room sizes; staff said the teen innovation center is sized for about 35 occupants and the adjacent teen lounge roughly doubles that capacity. The project will include an amphitheater, a library patio and a courtyard with game tables and plantings. Flores said planting and landscaping activities would begin in October.
Ending: No council action was required. Council members expressed appreciation for the contractor teams and noted increased community excitement as exterior lighting and interior finishes became visible from public streets.
