The Montgomery County Board of Education met July 22, 2025, in Training Room 1 and, after amending the agenda to add an executive session on personnel, approved multiple personnel actions including certified and classified personnel recommendations, a personnel-addendum amendment to reflect a voluntary retirement, team approvals, a reclassification of the director of early learning position to director of pre-K, and new executive director job descriptions.
Board attorney Powell advised the board before the executive session that any closed discussion of personnel must be narrowly stated. "The executive session ... regarding personnel matters, it would need to be regarding good name and character," Powell said, and the board amended the motion to specify that purpose. The motion to add the executive session passed on a voice/hand vote recorded as 6 in favor and 1 opposed. The board then convened an executive session of approximately one to one-and-a-half hours; no votes were taken during that closed session.
After returning to open session, the board considered and voted on multiple personnel items recommended by Superintendent Dr. Berg. The board approved the superintendent's certified personnel recommendations by hand vote (tally recorded as 4 yes, 1 no, 1 abstention). The board approved an amendment to the personnel addendum reflecting a voluntary retirement (vote recorded as 5 yes) and approved classified personnel recommendations (vote recorded as 4 yes, 1 no). The board also approved team appointments unanimously, reclassified the job description for the director of early learning to director of pre-K unanimously, and approved job descriptions for executive director of special education, executive director of federal programs, executive director of student support, and executive director of student wellness and culture unanimously.
Votes at a glance: certified personnel — approved (4 yes, 1 no, 1 abstain); personnel addendum amendment (voluntary retirement) — approved (5 yes); classified personnel — approved (4 yes, 1 no); teams — approved (unanimous); reclassification (director of early learning → director of pre-K) — approved (unanimous); executive director job descriptions — approved (unanimous). The transcript notes that no votes occurred during the executive session itself.
The board scheduled its next regular meeting for Tuesday, Aug. 12, 2025, at 5:00 p.m. and then adjourned.
