A facilities staff member for Proviso Twp HSD 209 told the school board that most summer projects at Proviso East High School, Proviso West High School and the Proviso Math and Science Academy are near completion and that the district expects buildings will be ready for the Aug. 11 student opening.
Office, cafeteria and mechanical work have been the focus. The presenter said Proviso East is about 85% to 90% through a deep cleaning program, with floors being waxed and corridors and bathrooms receiving attention. The kitchen hood system was tested and returned to service, and preventive maintenance on the high school cooling tower is complete. The presenter added, “We don—t foresee any issues with, passing the test from their experience with this work, And we—re ready to, show and show up for the inspector when he comes in.”
Why this matters: work on boilers, ventilation and food-service equipment must clear state inspections before students return, and the district identified inspection and certification dates it expects to meet.
Details by site: at Proviso West staff reported roughly 90% completion of deep cleaning, with the main office about 95% finished; new paint and carpet were installed in that office. The main office at Proviso West also is being reconfigured for different uses in coming months. The district said preventive maintenance on that building—s cooling tower has been performed and that the boiler inspection is scheduled there as well.
The district is repurposing the current main office space (location described to the board) to create a Counseling Suite to centralize counselors and provide a nearby conference room for meetings organized by grade level. The facilities presenter said the redesign is intended to improve flow for visitors and parents and to make counselor access easier.
Roof and other capital work: the district reported a roof replacement project is under way with a runway of work expected to be complete around Aug. 5. At the Proviso Math and Science Academy staff described a program of beautification, deep cleaning, disinfecting bathrooms and steam-extracting flooring after past power-washing proved ineffective.
Inspections and certifications: the district noted a state boiler inspection for Proviso East scheduled for Aug. 4 and an elevated category 1 pressure test and elevator certification for the Math and Science Academy listed as due on the 23rd (noted in the meeting as "tomorrow"). The facilities staff reiterated the district anticipates those inspections will be passed before the student opening.
Discussion versus decision: the presentation was informational; the transcript records no formal votes on facilities projects during the segment. Board members and staff asked logistical questions during the presentation about move-in timing and specific completion dates.
Next steps and outlook: the presenter said building principals will be supplied with what they need to open on Aug. 11 and invited board questions. No formal action was recorded in the transcript on the facilities items.
Ending note: the board was told the district does not foresee impediments to the planned Aug. 11 opening, subject to the ongoing state inspections and contractor schedules.
