Green River's City Council adopted an ordinance Tuesday adding a defined fire-inspector role to municipal code. The new section specifies eligibility pathways, duties, authority and recordkeeping standards for fire inspectors.
Staff said the ordinance allows two primary eligibility paths: certification via the state association (UFRA/Utah Fire Rescue) or a professional licensing pathway for independent contractors to serve as limited fire inspectors. Key duties listed include annual inspections, issuance of notices of violation, pre-occupancy inspections for new construction, follow-up inspections, and maintaining inspection records for at least five years. Inspectors are required to coordinate with the city building official and the state fire marshal where appropriate.
Councilmembers raised concerns about potential duplication of duties that previously fell to the fire chief, asking staff to review Title 4-1-4 (existing fire chief duties) and recommend any edits. The council also discussed attaching a fee schedule to the ordinance; staff suggested updating the general fire fee schedule concurrently to make it clearer to insurers and callers. A motion to adopt the ordinance passed unanimously.
Ending: Staff will compare the new inspector duties with existing fire chief responsibilities and return with suggested code edits and a revised fee schedule for council consideration.
