The Mitchell Sports and Events Authority approved two event funding requests at its August meeting, awarding $2,500 to Tour de Corn and $2,000 to the Power Play Hockey Clinic to support local tourism and youth sports programming.
The funding decisions were taken after presentations from event representatives. Katrina, Tour de Corn organizer, said the event currently had "275 registered with 50% of those coming from out of town," and described it as a three-day event that includes camping and motel stays for visitors. Katrina said part of the requested funding would support bicycle safety programming for Mitchell residents of all ages.
Nick Lemke, lead instructor for the Power Play Hockey Clinic, described that program’s growth and expenses. He said the clinic has grown from about 22 to roughly 46 participants in recent years and estimated ice costs between $1,600 and $2,000 depending on sign-ups. Lemke said the requested $2,000 was primarily to cover ice time and related on-ice costs and that organizers aim to reach about 50 participants in coming years.

The board’s awards are intended to defray event operating costs and marketing that attract out-of-town visitors, which the authority tracks as part of its mandate to support local events and generate hotel room nights. Both award motions were completed during the funding-application portion of the meeting. The next authority meeting was scheduled for Sept. 9.
