Clover Park superintendent highlights Caring for Kids fair: 1,300+ backpacks, immunizations and helmets distributed

Superintendent told the Clover Park School District board on Aug. 11 that district staff and community partners participated in back-to-school outreach events this summer, including a Caring for Kids Ready to Learn fair on Aug. 9 that served more than 1,300 students.
At the fair, volunteers handed out free backpacks with school supplies to more than 1,300 students and provided clothing and lunch as families exited, the superintendent said. Community partners at the event included the Lakewood Multicultural Coalition, St. Clare Hospital, Pacific Lutheran University, Clover Park Technical College and Bates Technical College; West Pierce Fire Department and several district staff members served as volunteers.
The superintendent reported the fair provided more than 100 sports physicals at no cost to families and 99 immunizations. "I think last-minute data coming in that they handed out a 161 bike helmets," the superintendent said. Volunteers also offered haircuts and other supports for families preparing for the school year. The superintendent described the event as an example of local community organizations "showing up for its community."
The superintendent also listed other summer and upcoming community events in which the district participated: Summerfest (July 19), National Night Out (Aug. 5) and a smaller Ready to Learn event at Tilikum Community Center on Aug. 12 from 5 to 7 p.m. The superintendent noted a joint base Lewis-McChord beach bash at American Lake on Aug. 23 as another large back-to-school event offering backpacks and activities.
Board members who spoke during reports praised volunteers and attendance at these outreach events. Director Thomas said the back-to-school events were "seamless" and commended volunteers; other board members described National Night Out and kickoff activities as well-attended.
The superintendent said district staff participation in these events will continue as the school year approaches.
