Commissioners lift hiring freeze for offices, add county secretary position

The Holmes County Board of Commissioners voted to lift a hiring freeze on budgeted positions in several commissioner offices and to proceed with filling a county commission secretary role the board said is already budgeted.
Commissioner Erickson and other board members discussed that an administrative assistant had already been hired for one district office. Erickson introduced Jane Dela as an administrative assistant, saying she has experience and will assist the board office. The board moved to lift the freeze on the county commission secretary position and on specified district positions that the board said were budgeted.
A commissioner said the positions are already in the current year budget and that staffing is needed to process decals, passes and other work tied to upcoming park operations. The motion to lift the hiring freeze was seconded and approved.
Board members said they will continue to monitor budget implications and will raise compensation matters in future budget committee discussions, but they described the immediately budgeted positions as necessary to keep office operations functioning.
The board directed staff to proceed with filling the budgeted positions and to return with any budget impacts for review at a regular meeting.
