Oklahoma City — The city manager reported a strong sales-tax check for the month, outweighing a pullback in use tax and placing the city ahead of budgeted targets.
In remarks to the council the city manager said the most recent sales-tax check showed approximately 12% growth for the month. Use tax, by contrast, was down about 4.5% for the July-August period noted in the report. When combined, the manager said sales and use tax totaled roughly 6.5% growth and put the city about $900,000 ahead of target for the year-to-date period covered in the report.
City staff cautioned the council not to assume the elevated monthly sales-tax figure will continue; staff attributed part of the strength to short-term factors, including large entertainment events (the city manager referenced professional sports playoffs) and higher utility collections. Staff said they will continue to monitor receipts to understand the underlying trend.
The city manager also reminded the council that detailed claims and payroll materials were available on the city’s website for review.
The council received the report; no separate budget action or ordinance change was proposed during the meeting based on that report.
