Council members ask for clarity on Blanton–City litigation; ask to hold oversight until resolution

Several Richmond City Council members raised questions on Aug. 4 about the status of litigation involving Hope Blanton and the city and asked whether the city intended to take further action or an oversight review.

A council member asked for clarity about the resolution of the lawsuit and whether the city or police department would conduct a review or refer matters to the police merit commission. The police chief replied, “As far as that goes, it's not resolved just yet. We do have a 10 day window to file any other petitions. At this time, we have nothing to add on that.”

Council member Jerry Purcell asked that, once the matter is resolved, the council consider establishing a committee under IC 36-4-6-21 to investigate the matter and to use the council's subpoena authority if appropriate. The council discussed waiting until the legal window closes before taking action. At the end of the meeting a council member corrected the statutory citation on the record to IC 36-4-6-21.

No formal vote was taken to form a committee or to open a formal investigation on Aug. 4. Council members said they would wait to see whether further petitions are filed and to receive any statement from the mayor's office or police department before deciding whether to pursue an oversight committee or other formal action.
