The Irondale City Council adopted Ordinance 2025-12, which adds a new municipal code section addressing visits to properties associated with illegal-drug activity.
Council members said the ordinance is intended to give police an additional enforcement tool to address neighborhoods where illegal drug activity is suspected. During debate, at least one council member raised concerns about language regarding possession or discovery of controlled substances "in close proximity" to a person and asked for clarity about evidentiary standards. A council member who had served on a federal grand jury warned that "close proximity" may not by itself meet the burden of proof and suggested rewording or reliance on corroborating evidence when prosecutions follow.
The council suspended rules to consider the ordinance immediately and voted to adopt it in the same meeting. City staff said the police department would be responsible for implementing the ordinance and for using it in investigations where facts support probable cause or charges.
The ordinance text and any implementing policy or guidance from the police department will be published in the official minutes and made available to the public, a city official said.
