Northern Waters Land Trust donates 286 acres to Beltrami County; county issues recognition

Shane Foley, director of the county natural resource department, told commissioners the land trust received a grant to acquire 286 acres that Potlatch formerly owned and donated the property to the county. Foley said roughly 250 of the acres are early‑rotation pine and will help replace pine lost in recent windstorms and a separate fire.
Why it matters: the donation adds forested acreage to county ownership at a time when the county has experienced storm and fire losses to its pine stands, Foley said. The property lies in Kind Lake Township with a small portion near 10 Lake Township, Foley added.
Foley said Northern Waters Land Trust and county staff have been partners on the transaction and that the donation offers opportunities for long‑term resource management. Commissioners accepted the recognition and thanked Foley and the land trust representatives for the partnership.
No formal fiscal action was reported; Foley said the land trust had already completed the acquisition and donation process prior to the meeting.
