Why it matters: The redevelopment at 24 Cathedral Place will reshape portions of Charlotte and Treasury Streets in downtown St. Augustine and includes four new private courtyards that will be visible from the public sidewalk. The board said it wants clearer drawings showing whether courtyards will be visually open to pedestrians, whether pickets or metal “reja” screens should be used, and how deeper tree plantings could be incorporated without conflicting with utilities or archaeological resources.
What the board asked for: Board members requested larger-scale planting plans and elevations, more shade trees in selected courtyards (and a discussion of where fruiting trees such as sour orange would be appropriate), and more detail on gate and screen design so the public can read courtyard space while maintaining private control. The board also asked staff and the applicants to coordinate plant choices with the city archaeologist.
Outcome: Continued to Sept. 18 to allow the applicant to return with enlarged plans, a simplified set of courtyard design options (including open and screened variations), and updated planting choices for courtyards and the Charlotte Street streetscape.
