LANSING — The Michigan House adopted House Resolution 155 on Aug. 19, 2025, memorializing former state Representative Edward Vaughn and recording the chamber’s tribute to his life and public service.
Majority Floor Leader moved the House proceed to motions and resolutions and the clerk read HR 155, which recounted Vaughn’s life: his upbringing in Alabama, service in the U.S. Army, founding of Vaughn’s Bookstore in Detroit, leadership in civil-rights organizing, and terms in the Michigan House. Representative Tate delivered a floor tribute saying Vaughn was “more than a legislator. He was a civil rights pioneer, a scholar, a small business owner, and above all a servant of the people.”
The House adopted the memorial resolution by voice vote after members were asked to rise if in favor. The clerk recorded the adoption and the chamber stood at ease following the action. The resolution directs that copies be transmitted to the Vaughn family.
The resolution text read on the floor includes biographical details and notes that Vaughn’s Bookstore was added to the National Register of Historic Places in February 2023; it also notes Vaughn’s committee service and community advocacy recorded in the chamber’s resolution language.
