Board approves large consent agenda; public voices concerns over reentry authority and Maple Avenue emergency repairs

The Cumberland County Board of Commissioners on Aug. 19, 2025, approved a large consent agenda of resolutions covering purchases, contract renewals, grant applications and emergency repairs. The item list spanned resolutions numbered in the 2025-434 through 2025-519 range and was adopted in a single consent vote.

Several items on the consent agenda drew public comment and commissioner questions before the grouped vote. Resident Sandy Acevedo urged commissioners to reconsider a memorandum of agreement authorizing planning and construction of a Southern New Jersey Rehabilitation and Reentry Center (listed on the agenda as Resolution 2025-506), saying the measure would shift control to a new authority and predicting that "when this new authority's board members' salaries get bloated, which they will, and the budgets they build grow out of control, which they will, Cumberland County will have to have no say and the taxpayers will have you to thank for that." Acevedo also asked about a liaison salary referenced in the agreement.
