Board grants consensus to hire outside contractors for before- and after-care staffing

Superintendent Jackie Collins told the Charter School Authority Governing Board on Aug. 19 that the district has faced unexpected staffing shortfalls for its before- and after-care program and requested board consensus to hire outside contract counselors to ensure safe supervision.
Collins said initial plans to staff the program with teachers proved infeasible because candidates were not available; the district instead employed a mix of junior counselors and outside adult counselors. "Can I get a consensus from the board to go ahead and hire the amount of outside folks that we need to hire to safely support the staff and the students that we need?" Collins asked. Board members voiced support and no objections were recorded on the record.
Collins said the hires will be processed now so staffing and payroll can be established and that the administration will return at the next governing-board meeting with a resolution and a budget amendment showing the number of contract counselors and the proposed funding adjustments. The hires were described as contract workers rather than regular employees; Collins said the program is intended to be budget-neutral and should offset itself over time.
