The Boone City Council voted to provide a letter of support for a Main Street Challenge Grant application from Downtown Moon to fund façade and interior improvements at the Dutch Oven bakery, 605 Story Street.
Downtown Moon representative Holly Secker told the council the statewide challenge grant prioritizes “quality design, preservation” and projects that “increase economic vitality.” Secker said the bakery’s plan includes exterior and interior work that preserves the building’s character while updating finishes, counters and display shelving. She told the council the program awards between $25,000 and $100,000 and requires a 1-to-1 local match; the application deadline is Aug. 27 and awards are announced in November.
Mike, who Secker identified as present to answer design questions, described interior updates that will not change the building footprint but will add countertops, display shelving and a window pastry display. Secker said one existing side door will be closed and converted into a bread display intended to attract passersby when the bakery is closed.
Council members moved and seconded a motion to approve a letter of support; the item was approved by roll call. The mayor indicated copies of the signed letter would be made available for the applicant to include with the grant submission.
