The New York City Council considered Introduction 1056 on Aug. 14, a bill introduced by Councilmember Huss Hudson that would require physicians and nurses employed or contracted with the Department of Health and Mental Hygiene (DOHMH) who work in public schools to complete annual competency training on health issues related to sexual orientation, gender identity and gender expression.
Councilmember Huss Hudson said the city’s public school system serves about 915,000 children and currently lacks a requirement ensuring school medical personnel receive training on the unique needs of LGBTQIA+ students. The proposed training would cover health concerns such as gender-affirming care and provide referral resources to connect students with appropriate services. Hudson thanked several community organizations that advised on the bill, including the Ali Forney Center, Transformative Schools, VNS Health and the New York Civil Liberties Union.
The transcript shows Introduction 1056 was on the floor for a vote; the excerpt does not include the result.
