County schedules work session on health‑and‑detention medical director RFP before contract request

Cochise County staff told supervisors the county has issued a request for qualifications for a medical director to serve both the public health department and the county detention medical program. The county said the item will be the subject of a work session to brief the board on the statutory scope and contract responsibilities before any contract is presented for a vote.
Gilman, a county staff member, said the position is out for bid because the current medical director gave 30 days' notice and the county expects multiple physician responses. Gilman said, “we wanted to present to the board because that's out for bid and eventually a contract will come before the board for further approval, we wanted to have a work session to make sure the board is aware of all that that position entails and the full scope of it.”
Staff indicated the solicitation includes statutory duties and a scope of services; salary and fee proposals will come from respondents and staff will score qualifications, negotiate price with the highest‑ranked proposer, then bring a recommended contract to the board.
Supervisors asked whether duties changed; staff said there was no change to the duties and that the work session is intended to inform supervisors about the role prior to contract consideration. No contract award was made during the work session.
