Public commenters urge transparency, defend educators and press for sports and safety improvements

Multiple speakers defended campus staff and principals. Melody Shabalala, assistant principal at Joseph R. Pye Elementary School, praised Principal Priscilla Johnson and the school's culture, saying the staff have produced “an excellent honor school report card.” Morgan Grady, a Somerville resident and recent college graduate, argued community members should not judge educators by social media posts and stressed teachers’ role in student safety.
Other public commenters pressed for facilities improvements and praised district actions. Mike Montai urged the board to commit to completing a concession/press-box and restroom facilities at Somerville High School softball by Feb. 1, 2026, pointing to booster-club efforts and past booster-funded projects. Cynthia Johnson thanked the district for implementing the free school-meal program this year.
One commenter raised concerns about a first-year teacher’s posted material; board leadership reminded the audience that personnel matters about specific employees are not appropriate for open public comment and indicated personnel issues had been addressed through executive session procedures.
The board chair reminded speakers of public-comment rules and that the board would not respond in the meeting to specific personnel items; executive session was later convened for student enrollment and personnel matters.
