Planning commission reports progress on extended-stay rules and recommends Highway 24 wording change

At the Aug. 7 council meeting the Planning and Zoning Commission reported progress on several zoning items and made recommendations to the Town Council.
Commission members said the extended-stay ordinance is nearly complete and that the commission plans to reread the draft one more time before forwarding it to the council. The commission also reviewed the towns zoning definitions related to Highway 24 and Main Street and recommended changing the language to refer only to Highway 24 so the zone can be extended without confusing references to Main Street.
Commissioners told the council they discussed a short-term rental request and related septic and water questions, but they did not reach consensus. The commission tabled the short-term rental issue and asked for additional study, saying members were "all over the place" on whether to amend the ordinance beyond minor tweaks. Members noted that the towns annexation ordinance must also be updated to reflect changes in state code.
The commission recommended that the council consider the Highway 24 wording change and signaled it would return the extended-stay ordinance when it has had another month to study the draft.
No formal council vote was required on the commissions informational report; the council later acted on related permitting items on the same agenda.
