Roads update: gravel sourcing, Wolong pit plans and haul impacts discussed

The county road superintendent reported progress on routine grading, culvert work and gravel hauling. Crews have been working through the southwest part of the county and planned to move to the Wolong pit for gravel extraction the following week, weather permitting.
Superintendent and commissioners discussed pit access and the condition of haul roads: some pits and access trails were reported underwater at times after heavy rains, and staff said they would send a vehicle to inspect pit access before hauling work begins. Officials noted the long haul distances from some pits and that typical production is five to six truckloads per truck per day.
Commissioners asked staff to monitor roads that heavy gravel-haul traffic has begun to degrade (Vanderhorst and other haul routes were mentioned). Staff said they would blade and maintain affected haul routes and consider scheduling to reduce damage, and that they try to conserve the best-quality crushed material for uses where it will be most valuable rather than using low-quality stockpiles.
The board also discussed flex‑fund bridge/grade‑raise applications and selecting bridge projects to present for state flex funding; staff said projects were being prioritized by potential ranking and county match to improve the chance of award.
No formal vote was taken. Staff will inspect Wolong pit access, adjust hauling plans as needed, and continue coordinating with contractors and local haulers.
