The U.S. Forest Service told the Trinity County Board of Supervisors on Friday that firefighters contained the majority of recent lightning‑caused fires quickly and that multiple fuels‑reduction and timber projects are moving forward this month.
Tara, a Shasta‑Trinity National Forest representative, said between June 30 and Aug. 2 more than 5,000 lightning strikes produced 57 fires on the forest, and crews stopped progress on about 95% of those within 24 hours. Of the 57 fires, 54 were held to 2 acres or less, she said.
Those figures came with an overview of planned and ongoing work intended to reduce hazard trees and improve forest health around campgrounds and high‑use recreation areas.
