Sheriff reports July arrests, bookings and staffing updates to Richland County committee

For July, the sheriff said the department recorded 42,100 "London vouchers" (term used in report), 37 inmate bookings, an average daily housed inmate population of 28, 350 monthly complaints, 44 citations issued, 19 civil process papers served, eight transports, and four individuals on electronic monitoring. Dispatch activity included 586 calls for service, 96 EMS calls, 125 police calls and eight fire-department calls, the sheriff reported.
The sheriff also discussed staffing changes and hires. Two staff members, Casey and Maria, left for probation-and-parole positions. The department has extended a conditional offer to a candidate named Matthew Frederick for a jail position, and officials said they expect him to start soon.
Equipment issues arose in July: the sheriff said one squad car is out of service after an inmate was placed in a vehicle that was later damaged in a wreck; another vehicle suffered a rock-through-the-window incident that also damaged courthouse glass. Officials said they are working through repairs and emphasized courthouse security and monitoring.
The sheriff noted work on the department’s initial budget proposal, describing a roughly 0.9% increase tied to changes in the radio project and related cost adjustments. He said one new squad car is being built and hoped it would be in service soon.
